Geographical distribution of the continents

Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. Today, the theory of continental drift has been replaced by the science of plate tectonics . The theory of continental drift is most associated with the scientist Alfred Wegener . In the early 20th century, Wegener published a paper explaining his theory that the continental landmasses were “drifting” across the Earth, sometimes plowing through oceans and into each other. He called this movement continental drift . Wegener was convinced that all of Earth’s continents were once part of an enormous, single landmass called Pangea . Pangea existed about 240 million years ago and started to break up into two smaller supercontinents, called Laurasia and Gondwanaland , during the Jurassic period . Glaciations

While individual continents and their species had to adapt to new climates as they drifted, they also faced a different type of climate change . The Earth has periodically shifted between very cold ice ages across the planet, to extremely hot conditions . These changes are due to various things such as slight changes to our orbit around the sun, changes in ocean currents , and the build up of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, among other internal sources. No matter the cause, these sudden, or gradual, climate changes force species to adapt and evolve. Periods of extreme cold usually result in glaciation , which reduces the sea levels . Anything that lives in an aquatic biome would be affected by this type of climate change. Likewise, rapidly increasing temperatures melts ice caps and raises the sea levels. Amphibians were the first group of vertebrates to develop limbs and to be able to leave the water to conquer the land. Even if they are seen as simple and primitive animals by most people, amphibians show a wide diversity of survival strategies which have allowed them to occupy most terrestrial and fresh-water habitats. Amphibians are animals that live part of their lives in water and part on land . They usually have soft , moist skin that is protected by a slippery layer of mucus . They also tend to live in moist places or near water to keep their bodies from drying out. There are different groups of amphibians: caecilians ; salamanders, newts , and mudpuppies ; and frogs and toad s. All amphibians: Are vertebrates (which means they have a backbone or spine ).
